Task 1
Farm safety videos
Please watch both of the farm safety videos.
While watching the videos, in your Technology books answer the following questions:
While watching the videos, in your Technology books answer the following questions:
- Why is farm safety important?
- What are some of the causes of farming accidents and fatalities?
- How many accidents or fatalities happen each year in the farming industry (approximately).

Farm accident videos
Please watch at least two of the farm accident videos. After watching the videos please answer the questions below:

Once you have finished reading this information on how to stay safe on farms you can continue to Task 2.
Use a google search to find the answers to the following questions and answer in your Technologies book:
- Approximately how many fatalities are caused by farming accidents each year?
- What is the leading cause of farming accidents?
- What is something that could be done to prevent farming accidents?
- Think of one type of farming activity and list the risks of accidents in that activity.
Please copy and paste this link in a new tab and complete the activity on farm safety for children.

Once you have finished reading this information on how to stay safe on farms you can continue to Task 2.
Task 2
You now have to decide if you are going to work individually or in pairs to complete the project. Please make sure that your pair is OK with the teacher if you want to work with a partner for the project.
Complete the following steps to get started:

Task 3
- Using the current model of your piece of machinery, change two parts of its design, and two of its materials to improve the way your piece of machinery looks and operates to make it safer for farmers to use.
- You must also include at least two of the following in your new design:
- It must have a light for night vision.
- It must have an area for transporting people.
- It must be coloured a high-visability colour such as yellow or red.
- It must have landing skids.
- It must have a winch.
- Draw a model of your new piece of machinery. Be sure to include detailed labels of what the machine is built out of, the changes you made, what it runs off and any safety features added.
- When you are changing and adding design features to your piece of machinery, make sure you are properly describing the structure, shape and purpose of each addition and change.
- Write an explanation as to why each item is important to the overall success of your new helicopter. Click on the link here to download a template for your explanation.

Task 5
- Click here to download a handout to respond to the questions below. Print this handout out before continuing below (check your teacher hasn't done this for you already).
- Once you have decided on the materials, components, tools and equipment that you are going to use on your piece of machinery, research and find answers to the following questions.
- Where do these materials come from?
- How are these materials made?
- What are the social and environmental impacts of these materials? Is their
production producing any toxic (poisonous) gasses or other harmful products? - How do you plan on reducing harmful material use, and how you will safely manage waste products during the production of your piece of machinery.
- What can farmers do with their old pieces of machinery when they replace them with your new design? How will this effect farm safety or the environment?
Task 6
- Click here to download a handout to respond to the questions below. Print this handout out before continuing below (check your teacher hasn't done this for you already).
- Reflect on the changes you have made. Think about:
- What your piece of machinery is,
- What design changes you have made,
- Why you have made the design changes,
- Statistics on farming injuries and fatalities,
- Why your new machine compared to the original,
- How it keeps them safe and are there any benefits to the environment?
- Use the handout above to plan, draft and edit a justification as to why your new piece of machinery is a safer alternative for farmers.
- After you have finished editing your justification, use Microsoft Word to publish your text.
